Pixelitor source image editing software is a free and open that supports layers, image effects, multiple undo etc. It requires Java 7 or higher.
In 2.2.1, it has more than 80 image filters and color adjustment, some of which are unique to Pixelitor. Some gradient can also be found only here.
Note that Pixelitor meant to be stronger than simple. You should have some experience with image editor to use it, because there is not much documentation available yet, and many of the concepts (layers, blending modes, Gaussian blur, unsharp masking, histogram, etc.) are the same.
